Music & Movement: Where Rhythm Meets Growth

Music is more than a song; it’s a language all children understand. Our Music & Movement program brings rhythm, song, and joyful motion into every day. Through live music sessions, intentional movement activities, and playful exploration of sound, we nurture the whole child, building skills in language, physical development, social-emotional growth, and creative expression, all while meeting Texas standards for early learning.

Step Into Our World of Rhythm and Motion

A gathering around our visiting music man isn’t just a concert; it’s a lesson in listening and collaboration. A morning dance party isn’t just fun; it also helps develop gross motor skills and body awareness. Children learn best when their whole bodies are engaged. We move beyond passive listening to provide active, joyful experiences where every child participates, creates, and grows. Through an intentional, play-based approach, we cultivate confident movers, expressive musicians, and joyful learners ready for kindergarten and beyond.

The Music Circle: Our Live Sessions

Our classrooms can transform into intimate concert spaces. These gatherings are magical:

Live Instrument Exploration

Developing Movers and Musicians: Age-Group Deep Dive

Our Music & Movement curriculum grows alongside your child, honoring developmental stages while building skills in rhythm, coordination, and creative expression.

Infants (0-18 months): Feeling the Beat

Long before infants can sing or dance, they absorb music through their senses. They turn toward familiar voices, kick their legs in response to an upbeat song, and calm to gentle lullabies. Our teachers fill this stage with rich musical experience as infants learn that music is a source of comfort, connection, and joy.

Toddlers (18-36 months): Moving and Imitating

Toddlers bounce when they hear music, spin until they tumble, and imitate the actions they see. Our program channels this energy purposefully. Action songs teach body awareness and coordination. Freeze dance builds listening skills and impulse control. Teachers model and celebrate every attempt, building confidence in both music and movement.

Pre-Schoolers (3-4 years): Creating and Expressing

At this age, children move from imitation to creation. They invent their own dance moves, make up silly songs, and experiment with tempo and volume. Children use props like scarves and ribbons to make their movements visible and beautiful. They learn that music is not just something to consume, but something they can create.

Early Pre-K (4-5 years): Understanding and Collaborating

Four-year-olds are ready for more sophisticated musical experiences. They can distinguish fast from slow, loud from soft, and happy from sad in music. They collaborate with friends in group dances. Teachers introduce vocabulary that helps children describe what they hear and feel, building a foundation for future learning.

Pre-K (Kindergarten Readiness): Performing with Confidence

They can follow dance sequences, play instruments in a group, and express complex ideas through movement. They understand that music tells stories and conveys emotions. Most importantly, they have developed a love for music and are ready to participate fully in kindergarten music and physical education programs.

Our Teachers: Guides in Song and Motion

Trained in developmentally appropriate practice and the Texas guidelines for physical development and fine arts, our teachers understand that music and movement are essential, not optional. They move with children, modeling the pleasure of physical expression. Classroom teachers participate alongside children, learning new songs and activities to weave into daily life. Most importantly, our teachers create a classroom culture where every voice is welcome in song and everybody is celebrated in motion.

Our Spaces: Designed for Rhythm and Motion

Every corner of our classroom invites musical and physical expression. The music center houses instruments at child height, inviting independent exploration. The movement area offers open space for dancing, with props nearby for creative play. Daily routines are punctuated with song: clean-up time, transitions, greetings, and goodbyes all have their own melodies. Children learn to anticipate what comes next through musical cues, building security and independence.

The Milestones Difference: Building Whole Children Through Music and Motion

Every time a child keeps a steady beat, they build neural connections that support reading and math. Every time they coordinate a dance move, they build body awareness and control. Every time they sing with friends, they build community and connection. Every time they express themselves through movement, they build confidence and creativity.

Our approach weaves together Texas-aligned standards for physical development and fine arts , weekly live music experiences, intentional daily practice, and expert educators who know that joy is the best teacher. The result is a program where children develop strong bodies, expressive spirits, and a lifelong love for music and movement.

From child-sized safety goggles to securely anchored structures in our nature garden, we create thoughtful boundaries that allow for boundless learning. Our teachers are vigilant co-explorers, fostering resilience and innovation within a nurturing and protected space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do children have music class?

Children participate in daily music and movement activities woven throughout regular classroom routines. These include transition songs, dance breaks and instrument exploration.

Yes. Texas Minimum Standards for child-care centers specifically require opportunities for small-muscle development, including “different types of music and videos, rhythm instruments” and opportunities for moderate to vigorous active play, including “dancing and creative movement to music and singing”.

Children explore a variety of developmentally appropriate instruments: egg shakers, rhythm sticks, tambourines, bells, small drums, and more. All instruments are sized for small hands and carefully sanitized between uses.

We never force participation. Teachers model joyfully and invite gently, allowing each child to observe and join when ready. Many shy children eventually participate when they see their friends and trusted teachers having fun.

Music supports every developmental domain. Songs build vocabulary and phonological awareness (early reading skills). Rhythm introduces patterns and counting (math). Group music-making builds cooperation and turn-taking (social skills). Dancing develops gross motor skills and coordination (physical development).

Both. Live music sessions with the Jam Cats provide a unique, irreplaceable experience. We also use carefully selected recorded music during transitions, quiet play, and movement activities to expose children to diverse genres and styles.

We select music that is developmentally appropriate, culturally diverse, and musically rich. Our repertoire includes songs from various cultures, classical excerpts, children’s favorites, and original compositions that support specific learning goals.

All activities are adaptable. Our teachers work with families and, when appropriate, with specialists to ensure every child can participate meaningfully in music and movement at their own level.

Kindergarten programs include music and physical education. Our graduates enter kindergarten with foundational skills in rhythm, coordination, following musical directions, moving with control, and expressing themselves creatively, giving them confidence from day one.
